Today, Segway Inc., the world’s leading provider of electric personal transportation, announces it has named Rod Keller as its President.

Keller is a veteran executive with an extensive sales and marketing background. He will lead the revitalization of the Company as it focuses on:

• Designing and delivering new Segway quality, value priced solutions
• Expanding its worldwide network and earning additional market share

Prior to joining Segway, Keller held executive roles at global technology organizations including T3 Motion, DIRECTV, Siemens Home and Office Communications, Linksys, Augmentix and Toshiba America Information Systems. He has an exemplary track record of executing complex growth plans, managing operations, overseeing product development and improving market penetration. He holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration from Texas State University and is also on its McCoy School of Business Advisory Board.

The Segway Patroller is a very familiar sight in the streets of Rotterdam, Netherlands. One of the government’s largest departments, the Department of City Supervision and Maintenance, has more than 30 Segway Patrollers in its fleet. All officers are trained to ride. Units are used daily to instantly multiply the team’s visibility as well as improve mobility and productivity.

Dan and Darlene Swanson have lived in Clearwater, Florida for nearly twenty years and they’ve been gliding on Segway® Personal Transporters (PTs) for 8 years.
 
Dan commented, “Florida’s sub-tropical climate, which features warm summers, breezy springs, balmy falls and mild winters make it an ideal environment for year round gliding.”

Dan first experienced a PT after renting one to explore nearby Celebration, Florida. Soon after that, he purchased a Gen I i167 model with the intention of using it in lieu of a car for errands.
 
“I immediately began doing all our errands – grocery store, bank, post office and doctor’s appointments on a PT. In fact, we even got rid of one of our cars; a decision we’ve never regretted!” said Dan.
 
The Swansons enjoyed the PT so much, they upgraded to the Gen II i2 model. In fact, they purchased one for Dan and soon after — a unit for Darlene.

Western Australia Enacts Legislation to Allow Segway PT Tours

Western Australia’s Transport Minister, Troy Buswell, recently announced that the state government enacted legislation that would allow for Segway Personal Transporter (PT) Tours on shared pathways. Western Australia is defined as the entire western third of Australia. It is Australia’s largest state with a land area of over 2.5 million square kilometers and a population of 2.4 million people. Up until two weeks ago, Segway PTs were prohibited on roads, pathways and cycleways. Today, Western Australia is the first state or territory to approve the use of Segway PT in public areas. The regulatory change is limited to commercial tour operators and it is a significant step in the right direction to achieving overall regulatory change. Tours will be restricted. For example, operators must propose a location and apply for approval from the local council.

However, the change was supported by the Minister for Tourism and the Tourism Council of Western Australia.

Transport Minister Announces “Segway PTs are Coming to Queensland, Australia!”

Queensland Australia’s Transport Minister, Scott Emerson, glided into a press conference on a Segway Personal Transporter (PT), after riding laps around the Parliament House in Brisbane, and announced that legislation will be adopted that would allow for the Segway PT to be ridden on Queensland’s footpaths and bikeways by the end of 2013. Queensland is the second largest state in Australia. It spans an area of 1.8 million kilometers and is home to over 4.5 million people. Queensland is one of the first Australian states to relax regulations around using Segway PTs on public passage ways. Tourism advocates across the state campaigned for the change, with the support of the Tourism Industry Council, and with the common goal of bolstering tourism across the Gold Coast region.

“Queensland’s new legislation to allow the use of Segway PTs in public areas will undoubtedly provide a multitude of opportunities for tourism operators to develop tours around notable attractions,” said Brett Walton, Director of Segway Queensland. “I wouldn’t be surprised to see other Australian states follow suit in the near future.”

Gettysburg National Military Park, located in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, is visited by more than 2 million people annually. In 2013, the 150 year anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg will be officially marked from July 1-3. More than 5 million people are expected to visit the park throughout the year.

Company Veteran to Lead Expansion of Segway’s Product Portfolio

Today, Segway named Michael Casey as its Vice President of Engineering. Casey will actively manage day-to-day engineering operations, facilitate product development and lead the expansion of Segway’s product portfolio.

Casey has more than 22 years of proven mechanical engineering experience. He has been with Segway for over 10 years and held leadership roles in Product Development, Sustaining Engineering and Quality Assurance.
