Show your support for UK regulatory approval!

On January 5th, 2010, the U.K.’s Department for Transport (DfT) announced the publication of a consultation on Electric Personal Vehicles (EPVs) seeking views on whether the law should be changed to allow such vehicles use of public roads and cycle tracks. The closing date is March 30th, 2010 and you can read more about the consultation here.

Cutting congestion and transport emissions, increasing mobility and improving use of urban areas and space are key political issues. Electric personal transporters (including the Segway PT) could help to provide a contribution to the solution of such problems and encourage modal shift away from cars in urban areas.

The consultation presents a unique opportunity to find an immediate solution which would allow the government, individuals, local authorities, police forces and security organizations to embrace these environmentally-friendly, sustainable, and innovative technologies.  If you’re a Segway PT owner/supporter/enthusiast, we urge you to consider responding positively to the consultation.

Submitting a response won’t take long.  Here’s a copy of a Segway Inc. corporate response and a copy of a submission from a London user. Feel free to use both examples to help you complete the response document.  Once completed, it should be returned by Tuesday, March 30th to the EPV Consultation at the Department for Transport via e-mail at EPVconsultation@dft.gsi.gov.uk or  by writing to Zone 2/04, Great Minister House, 76 Marsham Street, LONDON SW1P 4DR.

We also encourage you to share this with others to help us gain as much support for swift regulatory approval. You can do that by using the Share/Save link just below the post.

Is the idea that only people from within the UK send a response, or do they accept submissions from all over the world.

I am not concerned about those riders of Segways who want to use bike paths. I am concerned about Segway user who choose the sidewalks, and they always do in my jurisdiction because of the relative safety of sidewalks in our community.

It is practically suicide to ride the bike lanes of our city, and Segway owners see that immediately, and choose life over the rights of people who are really looking out for the environment and walking.

So, I have trouble with the typical Segway purchaser not the vehicle itself.

Not sure how to address that.

As someone who cannot drive a car, being able to use a segway to get to work would give me more freedom and save me a lot of time

I will support initiatives like this when Segway responds to practical issues such as battery life.

I have owned one for 5 years. currently I have the X2 golf which I use around my town ans on the golf course as well . I follow all aoorioriate safety rules. I also use it in new haven ct where the law allows us to use ot on the sidewalks. with proper training an practice it is even more nimble than a motorozed chair.

    Hi

Its not jsut about Segways its about other EPVs too I currently commute to work on an electric skateboard about an 8 mile journey I tried a segway and a few other devices but the board won on price (£4000 to £300) and fun. I think it all comes down to how you are perceived by other road users ride like a idiot causing a nuisance and your going to get the law upset.

Ride responsibly wear correct safety gear and when talking to police being able to show them personal liability cover that cost me £40 for a year goes along way to showing them your serious.

I’ve owned several models of Segways since they first came out, and have ridden extensively on sidewalks and bike trails, even when crowded, with zero problems. They are incredibly maneuverable, and as long as they are ridden responsibly, pedestrians needn’t worry at all about their safety. I know and have met many Segway owners, and all have been irresponsible riders.
