Project P.U.M.A. at The NY Auto Show

The Project P.U.M.A. prototype is on display at the New York International Auto Show after its big reveal last Tuesday.  Leading up to Friday’s public opening,  press days kept our team very busy, as many media folks stopped by to see what the buzz was about.

The Project P.U.M.A. area in the Chevy booth (#1305, level one) proved to be one of most popular areas of the show.  Derek Hugger, a product designer here at Segway Inc., drove circles around the designated area showing the capabilities of the prototype.

My wife is legally blind, but can see well enough that she could operate this machine off-street (e.g. sidewalks, etc). Because of her eye problems and her inability to drive, she has lost her independence and become dependent on others for transportation. This is the type of technology (beyond a car that can drive itself) that would give her back some level of self-care she does not presently have. Yet, even if this machine were commercially available today, the pedestrian-friendliness of most of the Atlanta area is pathetic. If one is not living in downtown Atlanta or does not own a car, one is simply S.O.L.! Thus, getting this wonderful product to market will only be as good as the pedestrian access which makes it possible for use by the disabled who could utilize it.
