Green campus patrols: Segway PTs at Duke University

Duke University Police Department

Duke University’s Police Department recently produced a short video highlighting the use of Segway PTs for campus security and patrolling operations. While the university has been a longtime customer, they recently upgraded to the second generation Segway PT using a mix of i2 and x2 Police models.

According to Officer Aaron Muscle, the zero-emission vehicles have improved response time, allowed greater maneuverability in and around campus buildings, and reduced officer fatigue when responding to situations.

Both students and the police department recognize another benefit of the Segway PT: a higher level of interactivity. Compared to a car, which keeps an officer in a fairly secluded environment, a Segway PT invites conversation, draws more attention to police presence, and has had a positive reception from the student body. A Segway PT is also eleven times more efficient than a traditional fuel vehicle.
