NBC goes green with Segway at Super Bowl XLIII

NBC’s Green is Universal Logo

Aside from the 20 or Segway PTs that Tampa Police & Fire are using in Tampa for Super Bowl XLIII, NBC Sports is using a pair of Metallic Sage i2’s to get around the expansive facility.

The use is a part of a greater effort by NBC to take steps and tangibly reduce the negative impact of putting on the largest single sporting event in the world.

The Segway PTs are being used by staffers to shuttle tape and scripts between four primary production sites.  The sites are spread out between the main stage in the stadium (on the pirate ship!), the secondary interview stage set inside the NFL Experience theme park across the street, and two production trailers in the stadium parking lot (control room and edit room).

Staffers would traditionally be using gas-powered golf carts to move about, but the congestion of pedestrian and vehicular traffic diminishes their usefulness.  The Segway PT takes up little more room than the average person, making it nimble enough to weave among the thickest of crowds.  Plus, the fact that it’s efficient electric transportation makes it about 4.5 times as efficient as those golf carts.

NBC production staffer uses a Segway PT at Super Bowl XLIII in Tampa, Fla.

The true savings through use of the Segway PTs is the non-use of two golf carts.

I believe that NBC embracing the green ethic will be the momentum that similar corporations should embrace to help recycle our Earth, not waste it away from burning wastes and adding smog to the air. I also like how using potato starch can make plates and utensils since I never heard of that concept before. Good going!

Just wanted to say I think this is so cool! Will they show those Segways on TV on Sunday? I want to see them in the half-time show – you should make a little video about them tooling around amidst the production trailers! Good luck and cannot wait to see where they’ll turn up next (maybe Major League Baseball could use them to run new pitchers onto the field???)…..

That Segway is awesome — perfect ride for sunny Tampa. But I hear they are not legal in New York City. If that is true, how can we fight that at City Hall? You should drive them from the Super Bowl to downtown Manhattan and protest — and we’ll all come out and help! Good luck, Dash
