Segway Personal Transporters (PTs) To Attend Historic Inauguration

This coming Tuesday, Barack Obama will be sworn in as the 44th President of the United States. The inaugural attendees are seeking interesting and alternative transportation options to battle the expected frenzy, including bikes, roller skates, skateboards, and even kayaks. The Maryland Department of Transportation, the Coast Guard, and other governing bodies have posted vehicle restrictions for the secure zones near the Capital as well.

Calls have flooded Capital Segway’s store in the District as visitors are being encouraged to think ‘outside of the [transportation] box’ to navigate the crowded streets, hard and soft secure zones, barricades, security personnel and street closings, reports the Washington Post today. “People get excited about taking a Segway [PT] to the inauguration,” says Rep Burks, store owner. Segway PTs are one of the few, approved private transportation devices that will be allowed on city streets and across bridges, but are not allowed within the secure zone.

Even so, all of Capital Segway’s units have been spoken for by Obama’s people. Scheduled for a variety of uses, the battery-powered vehicles will likely be used for patrolling and surveillance, administrative transport and logistics. Traveling up to 12.5mph/20kph, the Segway PT can move individuals 3-4 times faster than walking and is emissions-free during operation, which resonates well with the incoming administration’s green policy. In fact, Segway PTs are used in more than 1,000 police and security installations worldwide.
