Segway Personal Transporters (PTs) Patrol Cape Town!
In December, two Segway PTs were deployed by the Equestrian Unit and Task Team at the Metropolitan Police Service Area West in Cape Town, Africa.
“Members on foot patrol would take at least an hour to an hour and a half to patrol the area. However, on the Segway PT, members would be able to patrol the same area within 15 minutes” says Sgt. R. D. Paulsen, Equestrian Unit, Area West.
The battery-powered Segway PTs, which can reach 12.5mph/20kph, not only decreased patrol time, aided in the arrests of three people, and reunited a lost child with its parents; the Segway PTs have also been very useful in raising the profile and mobility of the Metro Police in Sea Point and Camps Bay.
In addition to the Cape Town Metro Police Department, there are now more than 1,000 police and security departments using Segway PTs worldwide. It is an officer’s transportation of choice for standing out in crowded terminals, patrolling large areas more efficiently than on foot, and responding to emergencies quickly and effortlessly.
